The Prophet listened — and in his wisdom, chose none other than Imam Ali (AS), the Lion of Allah, to go forth and bring peace among them. What awaited him, however, was no mere negotiation — it was a fierce, unseen battle fought beneath the earth, where Imam Ali (AS) stood alone against thousands of rebellious jinn, armed only with his faith, his courage, and the Zulfiqar.

It is recorded in Bihar al-Anwar by Allama Majlisi, Kitab al-Anwar and Al-Burhan fi Tafsir al-Qur'an by Ayatollah Hashim al-Bahrani, Hilyat al-Abrar, Nawadir al-Mu'jizat, and Kitab al-Yaqin. The Mysterious Visitor from the World of Jinn

One day, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was sitting outside Medina, in an open plain, surrounded by a group of his companions. They were engaged in conversation when, all of a sudden, a powerful whirlwind rose in the distance, swirling up a cloud of dust. The companions watched as it moved closer and closer, until it stopped right before the Prophet (SAW).

From within the whirlwind, a voice emerged — clear and commanding.

The unseen being greeted the Prophet (SAW) with peace and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you as a representative of my tribe. We seek your protection and offer ours in return. Our people have fallen into dispute, and we ask you to send someone from among your followers to judge between us with truth and justice. I swear by Allah that I will safely return him to you tomorrow at dawn, unless death or divine decree prevents me.”

The Prophet (SAW) then asked,

“Who are you, and which tribe do you belong to?”

The being replied,

“O Messenger of Allah, my name is Aṭrafah, son of Shamrakh, from the tribe of Banu Najja among the jinn. Before your blessed mission, we used to ascend to the heavens to listen to the news of the angels. But after Allah sent you as His Prophet, that gate was closed to us by divine command. When you were raised as the Messenger of Allah, we believed in you and accepted your message. Yet some among our tribe opposed the faith, and now they have turned against us. They have seized our springs, our pastures, and our homes, and they oppress our people and our animals. O Messenger of Allah, we ask you to send a man of truth who will judge between us and them.”

The Prophet (SAW) said,

“Show us your form so that we may know you.”

When Aṭrafah revealed himself, the companions saw a strange and fearsome figure — his body was covered entirely in thick hair, his eyes large and glowing, his teeth sharp like those of a beast, and his face unlike any human form. The Prophet (SAW) then made him swear by Allah that whoever accompanied him would be brought back safely.

When the oath was taken, the Prophet (SAW) turned to one of his companions and said:

“Go with your believing brother Aṭrafah, observe their condition, and judge with justice.”

The companion hesitated and said,

“O Messenger of Allah, how can I go beneath the earth? I do not know their language — how can I judge between them?”

The Prophet (SAW) called another companion and repeated the command, but he too gave the same reply. A third was chosen, yet his answer was no different.

Finally, the Prophet (SAW) called Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) and said:

“O Ali, go with your believing brother Aṭrafah, and bring justice among his people. Judge with truth and return safely by the will of Allah.”

Imam Ali (AS) stood up immediately, took his sword Zulfiqar, and prepared for the divine mission.

According to Salman al-Farsi (RA), who witnessed the event, he followed Imam Ali (AS) and the jinn for some distance. Imam Ali (AS) turned to him and said:

“O Abu Abdullah, may Allah reward you for your intention. Now return — your task ends here.”

Salman (RA) watched as Imam Ali (AS) and the jinn continued forward until the earth opened beneath them, and they disappeared from sight. Overcome with fear and sadness, Salman thought that Imam Ali's life might be in danger.

That night passed in silence and worry.

Imam Ali's Descent and the Hidden Battle

The night passed, and the people of Medina awoke for Fajr (dawn) prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) led the congregation as usual, yet his blessed heart was restless. After the prayer, he climbed a nearby hill outside Medina and sat there in deep thought, waiting for the return of his beloved brother, Imam Ali (AS).

As the sun rose high, the companions began to murmur among themselves. Hours turned into the day, and still, there was no sign of Imam Ali (AS). The hypocrites among the people began to whisper mockingly:

“The jinn have taken him! The same Ali whom the Prophet always praised — his pride has come to an end today.”

Despite their words, the Prophet (SAW) remained seated with complete faith in Allah, watching the horizon. He led Zuhr (noon) prayer, then again sat waiting. Time passed, and by Asr (afternoon), the Prophet's noble face showed signs of concern. The sun neared the edge of the desert horizon — and just then, the ground near the Prophet began to tremble and split open.

From within the earth, Imam Ali (AS) emerged, his sword Zulfiqar gleaming red with drops of blood, and beside him stood the jinn chief Aṭrafah, unharmed. The companions gasped in awe. The Prophet (PBUH) rose quickly, his face bright with joy. He approached Imam Ali (AS), embraced him, and kissed his blessed forehead.

“O Ali,” the Prophet (SAW) said, “you have returned — but what kept you so long?”

Imam Ali (AS) bowed his head humbly and replied:

“O Messenger of Allah, when I reached the realm of the jinn, I found thousands from Aṭrafah's tribe who had rebelled. They denied your Prophethood, refused to believe in Allah, and oppressed those among them who had embraced faith. I called them first to Islam, inviting them to the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed) and to acknowledge you as His Messenger — but they rejected the truth.

Then I invited them to peace — to pay the Jizya (tax of protection) if they would not accept Islam — but they refused that as well.

Finally, I offered reconciliation — that they should restore the springs and pastures they had seized from Aṭrafah's people — yet again they declined.

So I had no choice but to fight them in the path of Allah.”

The Imam's voice grew solemn as he continued,

“The battle was fierce, O Messenger of Allah. I fought them with the Zulfiqar until eighty thousand of the rebellious jinn were slain. When they saw the destruction brought upon them by the command of Allah, they surrendered and sought forgiveness. They accepted faith, recited the Shahada, and made peace with Aṭrafah and his tribe.”

Aṭrafah, standing beside the Imam, lifted his voice in gratitude:

“O Messenger of Allah, may Allah reward you and the Commander of the Faithful (AS) for rescuing us from the oppression of the disbelievers and bringing peace to our tribes. Indeed, Allah's favor is great upon us through you both.”

The Prophet (SAW) smiled, his eyes filled with divine satisfaction. The companions, who had doubted, now stood silent — overwhelmed by the miracle they had just witnessed. Imam Ali (AS) had journeyed into the depths of the unseen world and returned victorious, establishing justice among beings unseen to mankind.
