Yajuj and Majuj: Three Types You Didn't Know Exist

The reality of Yajuj and Majuj is one of the greatest mysteries of the Last Days. The Prophet Muhammad SAW gave us glimpses of their terrifying nature and immense numbers through authentic narrations, highlighting how little we truly know about them.

Huzayfa RA reported that the Prophet SAW described Yajuj and Majuj as two vast Ummahs, each consisting of 400,000 smaller groups, with none dying until they have witnessed 1,000 armed men from their own lineage. These creatures come in three striking forms — from giants as tall as the mighty Arz tree to fearsome beings with unusual physical traits and ruthless appetites.

Ibn Hameleh RA narrated that the Prophet SAW warned about their arrival, describing them as having broad faces, small eyes, reddish-brown hair, and skin so tough it resembles shields. They will emerge suddenly, flooding the earth from every valley.

During the miraculous journey of Isra and Mi'raj, the Prophet SAW met Prophets Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (peace be upon them) and discussed the Day of Judgment. Isa (AS) revealed the terrible truth that after the defeat of the Dajjal, Yajuj and Majuj will descend like an overwhelming flood, consuming everything in their path — drinking rivers drying and spreading destruction until Allah's divine intervention ends their reign.

This article explores the authentic narrations and profound descriptions of Yajuj and Majuj, revealing the chilling reality behind these legendary Ummahs and what awaits humanity when they are finally unleashed.

The Three Types of Yajuj and Majuj According to the Prophet SAW

Huzayfa RA narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAW said:

“Yajuj is one Ummah and Majuj is another Ummah. Each Ummah consists of 400,000 smaller Ummahs. None of them dies until he has seen 1,000 armed men from his own lineage. I asked the Messenger of Allah SAW to describe them, and he replied that they are of three types:
The first type is like the Arz tree. I asked, 'What is the Arz?' The Messenger of Allah SAW said, 'It is a tree in Al Sharm (Greater Syria) that grows 120 cubits high and rises towards the sky.' Then the Prophet SAW added, 'No mountain or iron can withstand them.'
The second type spreads one of their ears like a mattress and covers themselves with the other like a blanket. They eat whatever they find, including elephants, wild animals, camels, and pigs. When one of them dies, they eat their own dead.
One part of them will be in Sham, and the other part will be in Khorasan. They will drink from all the eastern rivers and completely consume Lake Tiberius.”

Explanation of the First Hadith:

Huzayfa RAs narration gives a detailed picture of Yajuj and Majuj as two huge Ummahs, each made up of 400,000 smaller groups.

They come in three types:

Giants as tall as the Arz tree (about 55 meters), unstoppable by any mountain or iron.

Creatures with one ear so large they use it as a mattress and the other as a blanket, eating anything—including wild animals and their own dead.

Their savage and cannibalistic nature is also emphasized.

They will appear in Sham (Greater Syria) and Khorasan and will be so hungry they will drink all the eastern rivers dry and even consume Lake Tiberius.

Second Hadith: The Physical Appearance and Ruthlessness of Yajuj and Majuj

(Narrated by Ibn Hameleh RA)

Ibn Hameleh Radi Allahu Anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAW once delivered a sermon while his finger was bandaged due to a scorpion sting. During his sermon, he said:

“You say that you have no enemies, but you will continue fighting enemies until the time when Yajuj and Majuj appear. They have broad faces, small eyes, reddish-brown hair, and faces covered in layers of thick skin like shields. They will descend from every valley and flood the earth.”

Brief Explanation:

This hadith describes Yajuj and Majuj's terrifying physical features — broad faces, small eyes, reddish-brown hair, and skin as tough as shields. It also warns that they will suddenly emerge from every valley, overwhelming the earth with their massive numbers.

Third Hadith: Isra and Mi'raj — The Signs Before the Day of Judgment

(Narrated by Ibn Masud RA)

Masud RA narrated that during the night of Isra and Mi'raj, the Prophet Muhammad SAW met Prophets Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa (peace be upon them). They discussed the Day of Judgment:

Ibrahim (AS) said he did not know its time.

Musa (AS) also said he had no knowledge of it.

Finally, Isa (AS) said he was given knowledge about the events that would happen near the Day of Judgment, but only Allah knows the exact time.

Isa (AS) then described the emergence of the Dajjal and said that he would descend and kill him Afternoon

Brief Explanation:

During Isra and Mi'raj, the Prophet SAW was shown events near the Day of Judgment. Isa (AS) revealed that Yajuj and Majuj will appear suddenly in overwhelming numbers, flooding the earth and draining Lake Tiberius

The Reality and Warning of Yajuj and Majuj

The narrations from the Prophet Muhammad SAW give us a profound glimpse into the terrifying reality of Yajuj and Majuj — two vast and fearsome Ummahs whose arrival will mark one of the greatest trials before the Day of Judgment. Their unimaginable numbers, terrifying physical features, and savage nature are beyond what most of us can truly comprehend.

From their unstoppable strength likened to towering trees, to their overwhelming hunger that drains rivers and lakes, and their overwhelming flood that will cover the earth — the warnings are clear.
